Three vintage Ferraris make up the top three lots at RM Sotheby’s Lake Como auction this weekend. Part of the Concorso d’Eleganza Villa d’Este vintage car competition, the star model is a dark blue 1961 Ferrari 250 GT SWB California Spider, estimated to sell between $11.8 million and $13.95 million.
Only 56 versions of this model were made, most of which ended up in the United States. This particular car started in Italy, then moved to Switzerland, the United Kingdom and eventually Germany. In 2010 it was brought back to Maranello, Italy, where the Ferrari factory is located, for a complete restoration. Since 2014 it has been displayed at the Museo Ferrari in the same city.
Ferrari historian and adviser to top collectors Marcel Massini guesses that the Spider is more likely to sell for between $13 million and $14 million, but could sell for even more. Another Spider sold at an auction back in February for $18 million in Paris.
The other two top lots are a bright yellow 1960 Ferrari 250 GT SWB Berlinetta Competizione by Scaglietti, expected to sell for more than $11 million; and a red, open-air 1895 Ferrari 212 Export Barchetta by Touring; estimated to sell between $5.9 million and $7.5 million. The latter has a strong racing history and is in pristine condition, which is rare to find on the market. It can still top 130 miles per hour!
