In early April, after her husband passed, a woman discarded boxes of old electronics to a recycling firm. Shortly after, the firm discovered a valuable item inside – a vintage Apple 1, one of around 200 first-generation desktop computers put together in 1976 by Steve Jobs, Steve Wozniak and Ron Wayne.
The California recycling firm, Clean Bay Area, sold the computer in May for $200,000 to a private collection. They wish to give half to the woman to whom the computer belonged, though they have not yet identified her. She dropped off the boxes while cleaning her garage, and did not leave her name or take a receipt.
The vice president of the firm says he remembers the woman and what she looks like, so all she needs to do to claim her $100,000 is show up at the company’s warehouse.
This is always a good reminder to do some research on old items in your home before tossing them out as junk – it could literally pay off!
