A Paris apartment that had been untouched for 70 years was discovered to hold valuable art and antiques three years ago. But why was it untouched for so long?
The owner of the apartment was a young woman who fled in 1942, fearing Nazi persecution, and never returned. Three years ago, at age 91, she passed, allowing her executor to send a team to enter the apartment. What they found was a well-preserved apartment full of wonderful pieces.
It was also discovered that the woman was the granddaughter of Marthe de Florian, a famous socialite, actress, and muse of Italian painter Giovanni Boldini. Many love letters between Boldini and Florian were uncovered in the apartment.
The most impressive piece was a Boldini portrait of Florian, painted in 1888, now valued at around $3.4 million.
