Have you been watching the Olympics? Night after night, athletes from all over the world are putting their talents to the test to win the coveted gold medal. But did you know that it has been over 100 years since winning athletes received a solid gold medal at the Olympics (the 1912 games in Stockholm)?
Gold medals received in Sochi this year are mostly silver (92.5%), with a small amount of gold (1.34%) and the rest copper. Silver medals are 92.5% silver with the rest being copper, and bronze comprise of 97% copper, 2.5% zinc and .5% tin. Much of the metals used came from the United States.
So how much are these medals actually worth? The gold medal is worth around $600, silver around $320 and bronze right around $3. However, for athletes and spectators alike, these medals are priceless, as they add pride and camaraderie to individuals nations and worldwide.
