At the end of the month, the United States Mint will release a very unique set of coins commissioned by Congress in 2012. What makes the coins unique is not what is featured on them, but their shape.
The $5, $1 and half-dollar coin are the first ever curved coins ever made by the U.S. Mint. One side features a baseball, while the other side, curving inward, features an image of a baseball glove. All proceeds from the coins – the $5 gold coin costing $35, the $1 silver costing $10 and the half-dollar costing $5 – will be sent to the National Baseball Hall of Fame to commemorate its 75th anniversary.
The research and development that went into the coins’ creation was “unprecedented,” according to the Mint. Although the first of its kind in America, curved coins have been introduced in several other countries like Australia and France.
Will you be purchasing one of these innovative coins?
