A piece of American trivia: Do you remember who supposedly said the phrase “The British are coming!”?
If you said Paul Revere, you must have paid attention during your high school American History class! But did you also know Paul Revere was a silversmith? Around the year 1805 he made a gold thimble with the letters “L.D.” engraved. The piece was sold here in Chicago May 21 at a Leslie Hindman auction for an astounding $10,080.
This particular thimble does not feature his maker’s mark, but looks identical to a thimble Revere made his daughter, currently located at the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston.
Would you pay $10,000 for a golden thimble?
