A blue diamond far surpassed its pre-sale estimate of $10 million to $15 million, selling for $32,645,000!
The 9.75-carat, VVS2, fancy vivid blue diamond is a pear-shaped pendant from Mrs. Paul Mellon’s collection. Mellon was a philanthropist and horticulturist. Not only did it set the record for highest price paid for a blue diamond, but it also set the record price-per-carat for any diamond ($3,348,205).
Seven bidders rivaled each other for the item, but in the end a private collector in Hong Kong took it home, naming it the Zeo Diamond. Proceeds from the sale benefit the Gerard B. Lambert Foundation, which supports the Mellons’ Upperville estate in Virginia for horticultural education.
