The most expensive artwork ever sold at auction was purchased Tuesday evening at Christie’s art sale.
“Three Studies of Lucian Freud,” a 1969 painting by Francis Bacon depicting one of the artist’s friends, brought a whopping $142.4 million from an unidentified buyer. The bidding took a total of six minutes, with bidders fighting for the piece in the room and even over the phone.
Also included in the sale were works by Koons, Richter, Lichtenstein, and Warhol. Altogether the auction brought in nearly $692 million, reportedly the highest total for any single auction in history.
