A couple was taking their usual daily stroll with their dog on their California property when they came across something strange: a rusty can sticking up out of the ground. Upon further investigation, what they found was beyond imagination.
The greatest buried treasure ever uncovered in the United States (according to coin experts) was buried in their own backyard. Eight old cans were filled with over 1,400 preserved 19-century gold coins in perfect condition. The face value of the coins is more than $28,000, easily surpassing the previous largest gold treasure finding with a face value of $4,500.
The estimated value of the treasure? $10 million. Included in the collection is the 1866-S No Motto Double Eagle, valued at $1 million alone. The couple, who remains anonymous, is going to keep some of the coins, and sell the rest on Amazon.com.
