During a full moon on Friday, June 13, miners in Siberia came across a huge nugget of gold weighing in at 6.66kg (14.69 lbs).
Machinery used in the mine, the Ukhagan mine in the Bodaybinsky district; originally cast the piece aside, where it was later found by a worker leveling the pile. The exciting discovery has workers hopeful that other similar nuggets will be found, as they rarely come alone.
The peculiar shape of the nugget, along with its weight, gave it the nickname “The Devil’s Ear.” It is estimated to be worth around $300,000 – depending on its purity. The largest gold nugget ever found, The Welcome Stranger Nugget, weighs over ten times the size of the Devil’s Ear (72.02 kg, or 158.78 lbs).
