A couple in Alabama purchased a clay jug 44 years ago for $12. Little did they know that it was worth much more.
The 5-gallon clay jug depicts the bust of a man in formal clothing. The couple kept it in their home, where it served as a holder for change as well as a toy for their kids. It was recently passed down to the couple’s granddaughter, who found some interesting news after researching the piece. It is one of three jugs created by German-born artist John Lehman in the 1800s.
Even after years of mishandling, the rare Lehman piece remains in good condition. The family chose to sell it to the Birmingham Museum of Art – who purchased it for $100,000.
