April 20-26 is National Coin Week, and in honor of the occasion The Central States Numismatic Society is offering “The Riverboat Collection” of territorial and private gold coins through Heritage Auctions today.
The collection consists of 63 pieces, many of which are rare and have historical importance, as products of the California Gold Rush, the Southern Gold Rush, and other areas of the west. Sixty-two of those pieces are pioneer gold coins, and one is an 1836 U.S. One Dollar Gold. The pioneer coins are from a variety of private, semi-private and government issues; most issued by private firms.
The most valuable item from “The Riverboat Collection” is a Kellogg $50 gold piece, one of the two finest known to exist. Also included is a Templeton Reid $2 1/2 coin with a AU-50 grade from PCGS.
