Jesse Owens’ 1936 Olympic gold medal set a record as the highest piece of Olympic memorabilia sold.
The medal is considered one of the most important in Olympics history. Owens, a black American track athlete, won this gold medal, along with three others, at the Berlin games in 1936. During a time of Nazi power, this was a big triumph for Owens.
The medal was sold Dec. 8 to billionaire investor and Pittsburgh Penguins co-owner Ron Burkle for $1,466,574. He plans to use it for an educational tour of historic pieces.
