Patek Philippe, the legendary Swiss watch company, manufactures watches considered to be among the most beautiful and sought-after in the world.
The company was founded in 1851 by Antoni Patek, a Polish watchmaker, and Adrien Philippe, a French watchmaker. Every watch made since then can be traced to this day. Since each timepiece is complex, it can take anywhere from a little less than a year to two years to produce each watch.
The typical Patek Philippe wristwatch will cost $17,000 and boasts excellent craftsmanship. The company manufactures all of its own parts, owning over 70 patents. Since its founding, it has released many significant models.
The Calibre 89 pocket watch is one of the most memorable. One of the most complicated watches on Earth, it consists of 1,728 individual parts, including 24 hands, a thermometer and a star chart. It was created for the company’s 150th anniversary, taking designers and engineers nine years; five for research and four for production, to complete the timepiece.
From British royalty to Hollywood celebrities, many well-known people have sported Patek Philippe watches. If you want to see some of the history yourself, the Patek Philippe Museum opened in Switzerland in 2001.
