About a month ago, we posted about the Pink Star diamond, a 59.6-carat diamond that was expected to sell for at least $60 million at a Sotheby’s auction in Genevathis month.
The Pink Star was mined in South Africa by De Beers in 1999, where it was originally named the Steinmetz Pink. It is one of the rarest gemstones ever mined in the world, and is also the largest known diamond that received a Vivid Pink rating. The stone took almost two years to cut and polish.
The auction took place last week, and the numbers are in: the Pink Star sold for $83 million, the highest price ever paid for a gemstone. The winning offer came from famous New York diamond cutter Isaac Wolf, who has now changed the name of the diamond to The Pink Dream.
