Would you ever purchase a Rolls Royce? What if it was once owned by the King of Rock ‘n Roll?
A 1963 Rolls Royce Phantom V Touring owned by Elvis Presley in the ’60s is for sale by Bonham’s auction house. The late performer ordered the luxury vehicle when he lived in Bel Air, California. James Young customized the vehicle with “high-tech” equipment of the time, such as electric windows, a radio, air conditioning, a microphone and even an in-car bar! It held a 6.2-liter V-8 engine with 200-horsepower, allowing it to go as fast as 100 mph.
The original midnight blue exterior paint was reportedly ruined by Presley’s mother’s chickens pecking at their own reflections, so he had it repainted a light silvery blue. In 1968, he gifted the car to the SHARE charity, who then auctioned it for $35,000.
Within the last 40 years, the Rolls spent around 20 years in a private museum, and has had several restorations. The vehicle is scheduled to be auctioned at the Quail Lodge Auction in Carmel, California August 15 and is expected to make as much as $300,000.
