In the market for a new vehicle? A 1962 red Ferrari 250 GTO Berlinetta may become the most expensive car in the world when it is offered at auction this Thursday in Carmel, California.
The coupe raced in the 1962 Tour de France Automobile race, where it placed second. Fabrizio Violati purchased it in 1965, and was the fourth and last owner. Violati came from a family who made its money in mineral water bottling and distribution, as well as agriculture, in Italy. He passed away in 2010.
Bonhams is offering this Ferrari at the vintage car event, the same that raked in $312 million last year. It is estimated that the Berlinetta will sell for somewhere between $60 million and $75 million, breaking the previous record held by a 1963 Ferrari 250 GTO that sold for $52 million in October.
A variety of other vintage cars will be offered as well, including a 1967 Ferrari 275 GTB/4 once owned by actor Steve McQueen, estimated to sell for $8 million to $12 million.
