A mysterious disappearance, a treasure below the sea and a battle over who the treasure belongs to – surprisingly not the plot of the next Pirates of the Caribbean movie, but a real life story occurring right now.
In 1988, off the coast of South Carolina, a treasure hunter from Ohio discovered $50 million worth of treasure from the remains of a ship that sunk in 1857. A legal battle ensued over who the treasure really belonged to, and in 2012, the treasure hunter disappeared.
The court contracted a group to bring back more gold from the shipwreck in order to help pay off investors and cover legal fees.
The treasure includes gold bars, as well as gold and silver coins dating from 1823 to 1857.
